Rickenbach is part of the Vorarlberg market town of Wolfurt . The settlement is named after the river Rickenbach and is the original location of the cable car manufacturer Doppelmayr .

Rickenbach as a district of Wolfurt

When the centuries-old administration of the region by the Lower Court Hofsteig was abolished by the Bavarian occupation in 1806 , the municipality of Wolfurt was created in its current form. Until then, Rickenbach had seen itself as a separate place - the connection to Wolfurt (at that time the settlement with the town center below Wolfurt Castle ) was unpopular with the Rickenbachers. The Rickenbachers criticized the long walkway to Wolfurt Church and created the mood for a new building for the Wolfurt parish church on the border between Rickenbach and Wolfurt. In 1831 there was a vote to rebuild the church, which Rickenbacher was subject to. That is why the Rickenbachers built the Sankt-Josefs-Kapelle between 1884 and 1887. The building in neo-Gothic style was completely renovated in 1973 and 1974. In the chapel hangs the painting “The Holy Philomena” by the Nazarene painter Gebhard Flatz from Rickenbach .

Coining of the place

With the Sankt Josef chapel and the Adler and Kreuz inns, Rickenbach still has elements of a classic village center, which, however, is separated from the heavily trafficked Landesstraße 3. The townscape is shaped by industrialization, which experienced a rapid boom in 1892 with the takeover of a workshop by Konrad Doppelmayr. The hydropower of the Rickenbach made the place attractive for the companies Zuppinger and Doppelmayr, but the Rickenbach was also used in the centuries before, a mill is mentioned as early as 1536. Viticulture continued on the Rutzenberg until the last vineyards were closed in 1880, because the completion of the Arlberg Tunnel in 1884 brought better wine from South Tyrol .

Rickenbach today

Today the former town center is deserted. Johann Peer (2006, p. 51) describes the district of Rickenbach as follows: "The strange turmoil of the place, which is expressed by the industrial buildings of different epochs (...) especially in the southern half of the town (...) not only causes irritation in the viewer, but also curiosity. One tries to understand this change and to delve into the special history of this place. If this is successful, Rickenbach gets its special charm from the direct juxtaposition of chaos and order. "

The planned relocation of the Doppelmayr company from the upper area of the district opens up the possibility of redesign. There are also considerations to expose the Rickenbach , which is currently canalized and piped, and to include it in the design of the site. By the end of 2015, a " master plan " is to be submitted for the redesign of the area that will become free , with the involvement of the citizens.
