Since 1925, Nofels has been one of the six fractions of the city of Feldkirch ( Levis , Altenstadt , Gisingen , Nofels, Tosters and Tisis ). In terms of area, Nofels and the associated hamlets are the largest district of Feldkirch.

geography

Nofels is located in the Rhine Valley in the tri-border region between Austria , Liechtenstein and Switzerland ; natural borders are the Schellenberg and the two rivers Rhine and Ill . The Ill flows into the Rhine at the northernmost point of the local area at the so-called Illspitz.

Nofels, located at the foot of the Schellenberg, also includes the hamlets of Fresch (on the Schellenberg, border with Liechtenstein), Bangs (most western village in Austria) on the border with Switzerland (Rüthi) and Matschels , although the latter is no longer inhabited and is a nature reserve is.

history

In the 11th and 12th centuries previously unused areas were opened up in Vorarlberg. The wooded floodplains between Schellenberg, Ill and Rhine were also settled during this period. The place name Nofels, derived from the Romanesque novale = new clearing, indicates the emergence of the place in the course of this settlement activity in the area.
If the first Nofler were still novels, Alemanni and Walser settled here in the following centuries, which changed culture and language (an Alemannic dialect is spoken ).

The first mention of Nofels, namely as "Noval", can be found around 1290 in an income register (Census in Romano) of the Mehrerau monastery , according to which interest from the Romanenland, mostly in kind, was also collected in Altenstadt, Gisingen and Nofels.
The first mention of a resident of Nofels can be found in a document from 1314, according to which an Ulricus dco Novelar = Ulrich, known as Nofels, had sold a large meadow.

Nofels around 1900

The history of the development of the “four villages on the other side of the Ill” was shaped by constraints and hardships due to natural forces (Ill and Rhine floods) as well as efforts towards independence until the 20th century. The local area has always belonged to the municipality of Altenstadt located a few kilometers to the east and was Allmende = common property , which was also used by farmers from Altenstadt and Feldkirch. This and other things led to centuries of disputes with the mother community over the use of pastures and forests as well as currency (dam construction). An improvement was made in this regard - after many complaints had been filed to counts, bailiffs and emperors - only in the 18th century.

  • In 1514 the old Nofler Bad on the border with Liechtenstein was first mentioned (Zehnerlibell), which used a sulfur spring at the foot of the Schellenberg. The water was said to have the best quality and healing properties. In the heyday of the mid-18th to mid-19th century, the Nofels sulfur bath was a social center for citizens and the military. The spring has now dried up, today's Bad Nofels (Nofler Bädle) is a Kneipp spa house .
  • 1540: Furtenbach'scher noble residence with a small castle below the Wart (where Neue Freschner Straße begins today) and vineyards on the Schuchtenberg (today Schregenberg, northern part of the Schellenberg). Burned down again before 1670.
  • In 1799 the French Wars brought hardship across the country. Nofels was directly affected. French troops came over the Schellenberg to cross the Ill river here and to be able to attack the city of Feldkirch from further north. Much has been plundered and violated.
  • In 1854 the first “poor house” was set up in the former Nofler bath. In 1882 the newer “poor house” was opened in Magdalenastraße. In 1972 it was fundamentally renovated and extended and continued as a "nursing home". In 1996 the new "Haus Nofels" was opened next to it.
  • From the 18th to the 20th century the floods of the Ill and Rhine increased steadily.
  • In 1892 the hamlet of Matschels was completely relocated to Nofels or Bangs .
  • In 1903 the entire property of the old Bad Nofel burned down. A legend, on the other hand, tells that the bath was sunk in the ground because on Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Easter Lent, people still celebrated and danced. Today's Kneipp Kurhaus was rebuilt closer to the town center, where the sulfur water was pumped from the spring through pipes.
  • Devastating floods in 1910 and 1927 led to an official construction freeze for Bangs and further resettlements to Nofels (or emigrations to America).
  • From 1927 (with a war-related interruption) to 1957, the dams on the Ill and Rhine were reinforced by Wuhr work (dam construction); the building material came from the Nofler quarry (Schregenberg, a northwestern branch of the Schellenberg), but also from the already small "Bergle" in Matschels , about half of which was removed.
  • In 1925 Nofels became a parliamentary group (equal) in the city of Feldkirch.
  • 1945: On the night of May 3, 1945, about 500 soldiers of the 1st Russian National Army of the German Wehrmacht under Major General Count Boris Smyslowsky alias Arthuro Holmston (camouflage name) fled via the hamlet of Fresch across the border of the Greater German Empire to Liechtenstein (municipality of Schellenberg ), where they received asylum.
  • After the Second World War , Nofels (today's Unterofels), according to oral tradition, was an airfield of the French occupying powers.
  • In 1975 the old Ill bridge between Gisingen and Nofels from 1922 (formerly over the Frutz ) was replaced by today's reinforced concrete bridge.
  • In 1981 the new elementary school with a multi-purpose room and rehearsal rooms for singing and music clubs was opened. In 1984 the “Protective Workshop” of Vorarlberger Lebenshilfe was opened in the former elementary school.

Nofels, a former farming village, is now a modern and constantly growing place with no high-rise buildings or industry.
