Tosters is one of the six districts of the city of Feldkirch ( Levis , Altenstadt , Gisingen , Nofels , Tosters and Tisis ) in Vorarlberg .

geography

Tosters is framed to the east by the bladder mountain, to the west by the Schellenberg and opens towards Liechtenstein in a southward direction . To the north, the Ill forms the border with Gisingen . The lower Illschlucht with the union bridge in the northeast is delimited by the Veitskapf on one side and the Margarethenkapf on the other.

history

The earliest mention of Tosters ( Thosteres ) was found in a deed of ownership of the Swiss monastery Schänis . The Swiss monastery probably came to the estates in what is now Vorarlberg through its founder, Count Hunfried (Hunfrid) . Since this Hunfried came to this region at the beginning of the 9th century on behalf of Emperor Charlemagne, it can be assumed that Tosters was already settled during the Carolingian era. However, the first settlement focus was not on the valley floor, but near the Schellenberg on the Rüti corridor , in the area of the small St. Corneli parcel that still exists today below Tostner Castle . Tosters was only a very small village for a long time. In 1363 , only 8 farms are listed in the property register of the Counts of Montfort , who owned Tosters in the 14th century, and 15 houses in 1538. Even around 1900 Tosters only had 350 inhabitants. The main reason was probably the Egelsee , which still existed in the plain between Schellenberg and Blasenberg , but gradually silted up. In the 19th century u. a. the well-known architect Alois Negrelli von Moldelbe made plans to drain the remaining swamp in order to make the area usable. It was only in the 20th century that the number of inhabitants was able to increase more rapidly due to the development that had become possible.

French Wars (late 18th century)

Votive picture 1799, Battle of Margarethenkapf

The occupation of Switzerland by the French in 1798 worsened the situation in Vorarlberg, especially due to the immigration of many French emigrants such as aristocrats and clergymen. The military threat had also grown, as France's influence now extended to the gates of Feldkirch . Because of its strategic importance, the city was heavily fortified and every town hall had to accommodate soldiers. There were numerous attacks by the soldiers and, in particular, the requisitions of increasingly scarce food.

In March 1799, a battle took place under the command of Josef Sigmund Nachbauer , Bernhard Riedmiller and the Croatian General Jelačić , with the Napoleonic troops advancing against Feldkirch on the left bank of the Ill near Tosters being defeated under General André Masséna and sent to Switzerland ( Helvetic Republic ) were pushed back. The war events at the lower Ill gorge or at Margarethenkapf are shown on a votive picture , which is located in the old parish church of St. Michael in Tisis .
