Josef Sigmund Nachbauer (born February 16, 1759 in Rankweil ; † October 25, 1813 in Ingolstadt ) was an Austrian first lieutenant and one of the leading figures in the Vorarlberg popular uprising in 1809 .

Live and act

Nachbauer moved from Rankweil to Brederis as a child . In 1777 he worked as a teacher in his hometown. In 1799 he took part as a first lieutenant in the fighting against the French near Feldkirch . In 1800 he was elected captain of the Rankweiler riflemen.

He organized the uprising in Vorarlberg against Bavaria. On June 5, 1809, he and seven other majors became leaders of national defense. He was arrested in Switzerland for a bounty of 1,000 guilders and extradited to the French. On November 10, 1809 he returned to Vorarlberg and was arrested again despite the amnesty . He was released on December 23rd, but was no longer allowed to hold public office. In April 1813 he was arrested again and taken to Munich and later taken to Ingolstadt .

On October 25, 1813, when his release was imminent, he died of a lung disease.
