Career
Sports background / beginnings
Fifita was chosen at the age of 14 years with other young people from the King of Tonga to in Japan , the sumo wrestling to learn. In 1974 he finally moved to Japan and was given the battle name Fukonoshima there . He reached the Makushita Division when his mentor and leader of his heya died in 1975 . Due to a dispute with his successor, he was forced to resign from the Japanese Sumo Association in 1976 . Fifita got into wrestling through two other former sumotori.
Fifita took his first steps at All Japan Pro Wrestling , where he was trained by Giant Baba and developed his wrestling style there. In 1980 he went to Canada and was committed to the International Wrestling Promotion as King Tonga . Fifita was able to work there with well-known names such as Dino Bravo , Jacques Rougeau , Butch Reed and the Road Warriors .
World Wrestling Federation / World Championship Wrestling
1986 Fifita was able to conclude a contract with the then World Wrestling Federation . He made his debut in the WWF when he was allowed to dig up the "bad guy" Big John Studd . But instead of the expected career as an individual wrestler, Fifita joined forces with Sam Fatu to form a tag team called The Islanders . Fatu and Fifita were given the ring names Tama and Haku . However, the team was denied title chances.
When Fatu left the WWF in 1988, Fifita was finally allowed to perform as a single wrestler. He was now allowed to win the King of the Ring tournament and gave Fifita a “King Gimmick” and the new ring name King Haku . This gimmick was previously held by the multiple NWA champion Harley Race and Fifita was positioned in the middle fight map.
In 1989 there was another change of gimmick and Fifita was now made the tag team partner of André the Giant, who was in poor health . As Colossal Connection , both received the WWF World Tag-Team title against Demolition in December of that year . Since Andrés health deteriorated and villains were mostly only used as temporary title holders , they had to give up the title at Wrestlemania VI in April 1990 back to Demolition.
In the following years, Fifita appeared in the middle to lower combat map, sometimes as a team partner of The Barbarian , until he finally switched to WCW.
From 1994 Fifita appeared under the name Meng at World Championship Wrestling and was involved in a feud program with Sting .
In 1995 he was added to the grouping Dungeon of Doom and within he formed the tag team The Faces of Fear with Barbarian, who has meanwhile also switched to WCW. Fifita got more and more the gimmick of a brutal savage, which was later made clear with a series of squash solo matches .
From the end of 1999 he was involved in the action for the newly introduced WCW hardcore title , which he was able to achieve in 2001. Fifita was the last WCW hardcore champion, since he moved back to the WWF, including the title. Fifita was the last WCW wrestler who switched to the market leader before the promotion was bought up by the WWF and was therefore able to negotiate a well-paid contract.
World Wrestling Federation / Independent
At the 2001 Royal Rumble , Fifita returned as Haku , and a short-lived tag team was later formed with rikishi . In the following years Fifita no longer played a prominent role and left the WWF.
After Fifita competed in various independent leagues until 2004, most recently with the Japanese New Japan Pro Wrestling , he ended his active career.
