action

The three Italian brothers Cosmo, Lenny and Victor Carboni live in poor conditions after the end of the war in Hell's Kitchen, one of the shabbiest neighborhoods in New York City. The brothers' personality could not be more different. Cosmo is bursting with confidence, a crook and always looking for easy money. Lenny is a former war hero who returned to Hell's Kitchen shot, bitter and disappointed with life and now works as a mortician. Victor is a simple, easy-to-influence young man with an imposing build, who immediately quits his temporary job to - persuaded by Cosmo - to pursue a career as a wrestler.

Because Cosmo believes that there is a lot of money to be made in wrestling, Victor, the youngest and largest of the Carboni brothers, rises as the “Kid Salami” - before every fight, he rises with salamis in the ring - to the local wrestler size.

After initial concerns, Lenny agrees to take on the managerial role of his youngest brother and, together with Cosmo, who is responsible for training, organizes enough fights for the young wrestler to finally get out of the slums with the money won from betting of Hell's Kitchen because each of the brothers has plans and dreams for a better life. For example, Victor wants to marry his Asian girlfriend and live with her on a houseboat in New Jersey.

First of all, it is Cosmo who sets the tone among the brothers and aggressively promotes the promotion of Victor, who practices the sport against his girlfriend's wishes. Lenny, on the other hand, worries that his younger brother could be injured in the fighting and repeatedly gets into an argument with Cosmo, who only thinks about the easy money. But Victor is successful, puts one opponent after the other on the mat and is highly motivated, even if he does not emerge from the fights without injuries. The brothers' behavior changes over the next few weeks: Cosmo begins to worry about Victor and struggles with feelings of guilt for having brought him into this situation. As the winnings from Victor get bigger and bigger, Lenny seems to have tasted blood and is more and more interested in how he can continue to exploit Victor financially and lives out his manipulative role to the full. Cosmo and Lenny often quarrel about this.

Lenny organizes another big fight for Victor that is about a lot of money. Victor is repeatedly fouled and injured, so that Cosmo wants to break off the fight, but Lenny continues to urge Victor to win. In the 22nd round, Victor can finally prevail and leaves the ring covered in blood and happy as the winner. Cosmo and Lenny storm the ring and ask the ailing younger brother if he is okay and why he held out for so long. With his perseverance, Victor wanted to show his brothers that there are more important things than betting on money and tells them that he liked the time best when they were just brothers, whereupon the trio hug each other again.

Reviews

“A superficial newcomer fairy tale in an atmospheric ambience that reproduces the usual ingredients and sentimentalities. A critical distance to the wrestling sport in its most brutal form is completely missing: the film is content with offering its excesses as a means of amusement. Character drawing, parodic approaches and acting differentiation fall by the wayside. "

"Partly flat, partly quite funny nostalgia ballad."

" Rocky " Sylvester Stallone is the lead, writer and director of this comedic action film. After his triumphant successes with the boxing strips for "Rocky", the muscleman moved in familiar territory. He contrasts the bitter aspects of the fight story with bizarre comedy. "
