Hoyt Richard "Dick" Murdoch (born August 16, 1946 in Waxahachie , Texas , † June 15, 1996 in Amarillo ) was an American wrestler .
Life
Murdoch was born in 1946 as the son of wrestler Frankie Hill Murdoch. His friends also included the two brothers Dory Funk, Jr. and Terry Funk , who later became second generation wrestlers, who accompanied their fathers to numerous wrestling events in Texas and thus grew into the family business. Richard's father Frank Murdoch was well known in Texas and received the NWA Southwest Junior Heavyweight Championship three times. Dick Murdoch attended Caprock High School in Amarillo, where he learned to wrestle and competed.
He made his debut as a wrestler in 1965 as "Ron Carson". He played the brother of his tag team mate Don Carson, but soon began wrestling under his real name. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he was on a tag team with Dusty Rhodes as The Texas Outlaws. He then wrestled as a single wrestler for Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and Mid-South Wrestling.
In the early 1980s he tagged Junkyard Dog . While he played the " redneck " in this team , Junkyard Dog should inspire the audience. The feud between her team and The Fabulous Freebirds became a classic in the Midwest. Racist stereotypes were a common motif in wrestling in the 1980s and fueled the show fights.
Like his partner Junkyard Dog, Dick Murdoch moved to the emerging World Wrestling Federation (WWF), but unlike Junkyard Dog, who became a crowd- pleaser in the mid-1980s, he only stayed for a year. During this time he was able to win the tag team belt together with Adrian Adonis . After the two lost their titles to The US Express ( Mike Rotundo and Barry Windham ), he went back to Mid South Wrestling, but joined Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling shortly afterwards . As a single wrestler, he competed against Ric Flair for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship .
In 1987 he feuded with Ivan Koloff against his "nephews" Nikita Koloff and Dusty Rhodes for the NWA United States Tag Team Championship , which they eventually won. However, the title was stripped of them when Murdoch performed a brainbuster on Nikita Koloff and injured his neck. In truth, Murdoch was wrestling for the World Wrestling Council at the time and only returned after MACW was converted to World Championship Wrestling (WCW). There he began to compete with Dick Slater against the Steiner Brothers . He then ended his active wrestling time and only returned for special shows.
In 1995 he appeared as a surprise guest at the Royal Rumble . He had another match against Wahoo McDaniel at WCW Slamboree. He then appeared in Malaysia and finally had his last appearance on May 23, 1996 at Pro Wrestling Fujiwara Gumi , where he faced Yoshiaki Fujiwara . He died unexpectedly of a myocardial infarction on June 15, 1996 at the age of 49.
Murdoch appeared in a total of four films: The Wrestler (1974), Vorhof zum Paradies (1978), Grunt! The Wrestling Movie (1985) and Manhattan Merengue! (1995).
Private life
Murdoch was married from 1966 to 1973. The marriage resulted in a child.
Throughout his career there have been rumors that Dick Murdoch might be a member of the Ku Klux Klan . Bad News Brown claimed this in a shoot interview and Tito Santana also stated this in his biography Tales from the Ring . Alex Greenfield, long-time chief scribe of WWE SmackDown, told a story of Dusty Rhodes who said he had attended a clan party with Murdoch, but Murdoch withheld that detail from him. Also, Rocky Johnson , father of Dwayne Johnson stated during a fight to have had with him a controversy when he tackled him harder than was usual. Then Johnson k. o. beaten.
