Dormace Funk, Jr. (born February 3, 1941 in Amarillo , Texas ), known by his ring name Dory Funk, Jr. is a retired American wrestler and wrestling trainer. He is the son of Dory Funk Sr. , his brother is Terry Funk . He is the inventor of the Texas Cloverleaf surrender and maintains the Funking Conservatory , a wrestling school. His students are part of a "! Bang!" named wrestling show in Ocala , Florida . Funk Jr. held the NWA World Heavyweight Championship title for four years, which is the fifth longest reign of that title.
In 2009 he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame along with his brother Terry .
Career
Beginning
Dory Funk Jr.'s wrestling career began in January 1963 after ending his college football career with a 15:14 win for his West Texas State University team against Ohio University at the Sun Bowl in El Paso , Texas. Funk's first match was a win against Don Fargo in Amarillo, Texas. In his corner stood the West Texas State University All American Jerry Logan , Fargo was accompanied by his brother Jim. Dory Funk Jr. received additional support from the West Texas State University Football Team and the Tascosa High School amateur wrestling team , which Dory trained as a student coach under coach James Kyle.
National Wrestling Alliance
Dory Funk Jr. joined the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) in 1968 and won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship from Gene Kiniski in Tampa , Florida on February 11, 1969 . He held this title for the next four and a half years, the second longest uninterrupted reign for an NWA title ( Lou Thesz wore the NWA World Title from November 27, 1949 to March 15, 1956). Dory and his brother Terry are the only brothers in history to hold that title.
Dory Funk Jr. lost the NWA World Championship on May 24, 1973 after an incompletely cured injury, which he and his father said he sustained in an accident on his ranch. Contradicting sources suggest that this accident was only made up because Dory Funk Sr. did not want his son to lose the title to another face wrestler, Jack Brisco , which is why the match was rebooked so that the Heel Harley Race Funks became a new opponent. This claim may have been an attempt to explain why he lost the title. Race only held the title for a few months before taking it over to Brisco.
Dory Funk Jr. competed in the NWA in the 1970s and early 1980s, primarily in the Mid-Atlantic , Georgia , Florida, and central states regions . In December 1984 he played a tag team match with his brother Terry against Bruiser Brody and Stan Hansen , which later received a 5-star rating from Dave Meltzer .
In January 1986 Dory made his debut (under the name "Hoss" ) on the side of Terry Funk in the WWF . At WrestleMania 2 , they defeated Junkyard Dog and Tito Santana . Terry left the doctorate shortly afterwards, but Dory stayed and formed a new tag team with his " brother " Jimmy Jack Funk , who was not really related to the Funks. Dory Funk Jr. joined the Royal Rumble in 1996 as a single wrestler in the WWF.
Later years
Today Dory Funk Jr. runs the Funking Conservatory Wrestlink School and teaches his wrestling methods there. Some of his famous students are Jeff Hardy , Matt Hardy , Christian , Lita , Kurt Angle , Mickie James , Edge , Ted DiBiase , Test , and Delirious .
On March 1, 2008, Dory Funk and Nishimura defeated their opponents Genichiro Tenryu and Masanobu Fuchi in Funk's farewell match.
On February 16, 2009, WWE Raw announced that Dory and Terry Funk would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by Dusty Rhodes .
In TNA Today from 1 April 2010 Dory Funk conducted an interview with Jeremy Borash .
Private life
Dory married his first wife, Jimmie, in 1960. They divorced in 1983. They have three children and five grandchildren together. One of his grandchildren is trained by Funk Jr.
In 1989, Dory married his second and current wife, Marti.
