The WCW United States Tag Team Championship was an American wrestling title that was continued by Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP) under the banner of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and later World Championship Wrestling (WCW). The championship was introduced in 1986 as the NWA United States Tag Team Championship and renamed in 1991. He was discontinued on June 25, 1992. As usual in wrestling , the title was awarded as part of a storyline .
history
1986 promoter Jim Crockett Jr. introduced the NWA United States Tag Team Championship. The title was a merger of the two NWA tag team titles NWA Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Championship and NWA National Tag Team Championship , both of which were discontinued. The title was only allowed to be held by a male tag team and could only be defended in tag team matches (in contrast to the ECW World Tag Team Championship, for example ). A tournament was held to determine the first champions. The first two title holders were thus on September 28, 1986 Krusher Khruschev and Ivan Koloff .
In 1988, Crockett sold Jim Crockett Promotions to Ted Turner , who renamed the promotion World Championship Wrestling. Until January 1991 the title was continued under its old name until a rebranding was carried out in January 1991. The then current champions, the Steiner Brothers ( Rick and Scott Steiner ) became the last champions under the old title and the first champions after the rebranding as the WCW United States Tag Team Championship. The title continued until July 31, 1992, when it was canceled in favor of the WCW World Tag Team Championship , with The Barbarian and Dick Slater becoming the last titleholders .
