Ron Garvin (* thirtieth March 1945 in Montreal , Quebec , Canada as Roger Barnes ) is a former Canadian wrestler . He was best known for his appearances for Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling and the World Wrestling Federation (now: WWE).

Career

Barnes began wrestling in 1962, initially under his maiden name. He was trained by Pat Patterson . His ring name Ron Garvin, under which he later became much better known, he got at that time because he formed a tag team with Terry Garvin , who appeared as his brother. The duo has performed in numerous promotions and won a number of regional titles. Jimmy Garvin , who in real life is Garvin's stepson, joined as manager .

In the late 1970s, Garvin also made a name for himself as a single wrestler. he performed mostly in Georgia , Alabama , Kentucky and Tennessee . He appeared there for the promotions of Ron Fuller (Southeastern Championship Wrestling), Angelo Poffo (International Championship Wrestling) and other member associations of the National Wrestling Alliance . His well-known opponents at the time included Randy Savage , Andre the Giant , Bob Orton, Jr. and Jake Roberts .

In 1984 he joined the distinguished Promotion Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling from Jim Crockett on. There he celebrated his greatest successes. So he won the NWA United States Tag Team Championship with Barry Windham and had a feud with Jim Cornette's version of The Midnight Express .

On September 25, 1987 Garvin Ric Flair was allowed to defeat and secure the NWA World Heavyweight Championship . The winner of the match was planned as an interim champion from the start, as Flair needed an opponent for the first edition of the major event Starcade. As a result, many wrestlers turned down the job . Garvin, now 42, was sure that this would be his last chance to win the title and agreed. He was allowed to keep the title for 62 days, after which Flair took the championship back at Starcade as planned .

He then feuded against Kevin Sullivan and was allowed to play the heel for the first time when he knocked down Dusty Rhodes . In August, however, he separated in a dispute from the promotion and then wrestled for the American Wrestling Association (AWA) and the World Wrestling Council (WWC).

At the end of 1988 he signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and appeared there as the crowd favorite as "Rugged" Ronnie Garvin. At the Royal Rumble in 1989 he was kicked out of the ring by Andre the Giant. His match against Dino Bravo at Wrestlemania V , he had to lose. He then had a feud against Greg Valentine , which ended in a "retirement match". Then he portrayed a referee who was often violent when one of the wrestlers did not follow his instructions. Eventually he was "suspended" after a blow against Jimmy Snuka .

At the SummerSlam , he managed to get back into a wrestler using a trick. Then he feuded again against Valentine. An incipient feud against Rick Martel was discontinued as Garvin left WWF in 1990.

In the 1990s he first came to Smoky Mountain Wrestling , where he played against Kevin Sullivan and Paul Orndorff . He then appeared in various independent leagues. Professionally, he ran several used car stores in Gaston County , North Carolina . He also has a pilot's license . He played his last match in 2011 at Juggalo Championship Wrestling , where he competed in a Legends Battle Royale.
