Bad Boys Blue is a pop music group founded in 1984 that was one of the most successful representatives in the Euro Disco sector in the second half of the 1980s . During their career there have been numerous line-up changes to the band; only John McInerney has been there since it was founded.
Band history
1984-1989
For their label Coconut Records , Tony Hendrik and his wife Karin van Haaren were looking for musicians with whom they wanted to implement their own musical ideas. Finally, the American Andrew Freddie Thomas, the Englishman John Edward McInerney and the Jamaican Trevor Oliver Taylor formed the band Bad Boys Blue .
At first, the group did not receive any major attention; the debut single LOVE flopped in My Car . But the breakthrough came with the second single You're a Woman . The title rose to number 8 in the German charts in the summer of 1985 and was able to maintain its position in the top ten for nine weeks. In some countries (including Austria) it even made it to the top of the charts. In the next few years other hits followed, such as I Wanna Hear Your Heartbeat (Sunday Girl) , Come Back and Stay , A World Without You (Michelle) and Lady in Black .
In 1988 Trevor Taylor got out after he had been replaced as the previous lead singer by John McInerney. For the single Hungry for Love , he returned briefly to the group the following year, only to leave it for good. Trevor Bannister was hired as the new third man.
1990-1999
In the early 1990s, the group was able to build on the successes of the previous decade, but after 1991 there was no commercial success in the German-speaking area. Several tours through Russia , Ukraine and the Baltic States brought a great increase in popularity in Eastern Europe at this time. However, the attempt to gain a foothold in Great Britain and the USA failed ; only with the single Save Your Love they could place in the US charts .
When Trevor Bannister left Bad Boys Blue in 1993, they became a duo. John McInerney and Andrew Thomas separated from their previous producers and switched from Coconut Records to the Intercord label . But even with a new style of music ( Eurodance ) one did not find back to the old successes.
In 1995 Mo Russel joined the group, he took on the role of lead singer and lyricist. In 1998 the band returned to Coconut Records . Under the impression of the extremely successful Modern Talking Revival, new versions of the old hits were also released, in which Kevin McCoy took over the rap parts. With Tony Hendrik and David Brandes , new titles were also produced as a result. The albums Back and ... continued became the greatest commercial successes in recent years.
After the publication of Follow the Light in the fall of 1999, Mo Russel left. For him, Kevin McCoy became a permanent member of Bad Boys Blue in 2000.
Since 2000
In July 2000 the album Tonite was released , which completely flopped due to lack of promotion; at the decision of the record company there was no further release apart from the preliminary single I'll Be Good . The following year, the contractual collaboration between Bad Boys Blue and Coconut Records was again ended.
In 2002, the group signed a contract with the label Bros Music by David Brandes and began work on a new album, which was released in the summer of 2003. The reaction to the album Around the World, produced with Brandes, and the single Lover on the Line , which was released from it, remained cautious; The album and single were each granted only a short stay in the German charts. While the group therefore only made a few appearances in German-speaking countries, in 2004 mainly concerts took place in Eastern Europe, where the group was popular. Bad Boys Blue only appeared as a duo after Kevin McCoy left the group to follow his wife to the USA.
In January 2005 the last concert of John McInerney and Andrew Thomas took place, a little later they parted ways. John McInerney, now the only remaining founding member, initially appeared as a solo artist. Carlos Ferreira joined him in January 2006, together they recorded a new album and went on tour. Since the band name was jointly owned by John McInerney and Andrew Thomas in 2001 , the addition "featuring John McInerney" was added to new releases, such as the album Heart and Soul (2008).
Andrew Thomas founded together with Kevin and Herbert McCoy (who was later replaced by Jeremy Cummins) the formation The Real Bad Boys Blue . When performing with old songs, however, they used old recordings for their playback, so that the voices of Trevor Taylor and John McInerney could be heard.
On January 19, 2008, Trevor Taylor died of a heart attack. Andrew Thomas died of cancer on July 21, 2009. In October of that year, the compilation Unforgettable was published in memory of the two deceased founding members.
On August 27, 2010, the double album 25 was released (based on the 25th anniversary of the formation), for which numerous old tracks were re-recorded.
