The Innkreisbahn , also known as the Innviertelbahn , is a single-track, non-electrified main line in Upper Austria . It runs from Neumarkt-Kallham station on the Wels – Passau line via Ried im Innkreis and Braunau am Inn to the state border with Germany , where it merges with the Munich – Simbach railway line . The Innkreisbahn thus connects the Innviertel with the Upper Austrian central area and Bavaria . The route is part of the supplementary network ofÖBB-Infrastruktur AG .

It represents the shortest connection between the cities of Vienna and Munich. For this reason, the Orient Express took this route between 1883 and 1897. However, since 2013 all long-distance traffic between these two cities has been using the detour via Salzburg , as this route is better developed and fully electrified and the greater Salzburg area should not be left out as an important transport hub. The line is to be electrified by 2029.

story

While Schärding was connected to the rail network with the commissioning of the Passau Railway in 1861 , the two other Innviertel district capitals Ried and Braunau initially remained without a railway connection. Since the Innviertel was geographically and historically strongly oriented towards Bavaria, a line from Neumarkt via Ried to Braunau with a connection to the Bavarian rail network emerged at the urging of Rieder. In 1865 the building and operating license was granted, in 1868 the kk priv. Aktiengesellschaft der Neumarkt - Ried - Braunauer Bahn , based in Ried, was founded and construction work began one year later. In 1870 the railway company became part of the Empress Elisabeth Railway bought, which already operated the railway line from Vienna to Salzburg (with a connection to Munich), as it feared competition from the 65 km shorter connection to Munich via Ried and Braunau.

On December 20, 1870, operations on the Neumarkt-Kallham - Braunau route began. After the completion of the bridge over the Inn and the opening of the line from Simbach via Mühldorf to Munich , traffic to Simbach station was started on June 1, 1871 . In 1882 the Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Bahn was nationalized and the line became part of the Imperial and Royal State Railways . From 1883 to 1897 the Orient Express ran via Simbach instead of via Salzburg as it did later.

The agreement between the state of Upper Austria and the ÖBB presented in July 2019 stipulates that the entire length of the route should be electrified by 2030.

technology

The route between Pram-Haag and Mining is controlled in simplified remote control operation by the remote control station in Ried im Innkreis. The Ried im Innkreis and Braunau am Inn stations and the Mining 1 junction in Dietfurt are locally occupied. Neumarkt-Kallham train station has not been manned since 2015. An electronic signal box is used at Ried im Innkreis station , while two signal boxes (some of which are equipped with form signaling technology) are used at Braunau am Inn station. The line is equipped with the PZB train protection system . During the night (0–4 o'clock) there is a service chest on the entire route , during this time the points are set for a passage from Neumarkt-Kallham to Braunau am Inn.

passenger traffic

The route between Neumarkt-Kallham and Simbach (Inn) is served by regional trains. These run every hour on working days during the day , at peak times in the morning, at noon and in the late afternoon every half hour, on Sundays and public holidays every two hours. Some of these trains run directly from / to Wels or Linz . There are also some regional express trains that are used as amplifiers.

The earliest trains in the direction of Neumarkt-Kallham leave Braunau am Inn on weekdays at 5:13 a.m. and Ried im Innkreis at 4:49 a.m., the latest from Neumarkt-Kallham reaches Ried at 11:47 p.m. and Braunau at 11:11 p.m. .

Since the timetable change in December 2013, the trains have been running at a new frequency, which has made it possible to significantly improve transfer rates. The trains of the Innkreisbahn now have a direct connection to the Südostbayernbahn in Simbach am Inn , in Ried im Innkreis the clock node called "Spinne Ried" could be reintroduced Neumarkt-Kallham and Attnang-Puchheim ), and passengers on the Innkreisbahn now have a direct connection to the Railjet trains from and to Vienna Hbf in Linz . The direct train that was introduced in 2008 and recently only runs once a day from Munich via Mühldorf am Inn to Garsten was discontinued with the 2013 timetable change, so there are no more connections between Bavaria and Upper Austria on this route.

To speed things up, numerous stops on this route are being used as stops on demand . This means that regional trains only stop when the stop request button on the train is pressed to get off or when passengers are waiting on the platform.

Locomotive and wagon use

A large part of the regional trains is still made up of the older diesel multiple units of the 5047 series , and more and more diesel multiple units of the 5022 series (“ Desiro ”) are used. Individual, heavily used trains are formed from “ CityShuttle ” cars and hauled by diesel locomotives of the 2016 series.

Freight transport

The freight transport has on the Innkreis track only of secondary importance. During the beet campaign there are block trains from Ried im Innkreis to Enns, the wagons are delivered as empty trains. Occasional shunting goods trains also run between Ried im Innkreis and Neumarkt-Kallham. Once a working day there is also a mixed freight train between Braunau am Inn or Mühldorf am Inn and the Wels marshalling yard . A coke train operated by LTE Logistik- und Transport GmbH runs two days a week between Žiar nad Hronom (Slovakia) and the Wackerwerk in Burghausen(Germany). In the east-west direction, however, the train initially travels as planned via the Westbahn to Steindorf and from there via the Mattigtalbahn to Braunau am Inn. All freight trains will be hauled by locomotives of the 2016 series as planned.
