The Attnang-Puchheim train station is located in Upper Austria in the Vöcklabruck district and is the only train station in the urban area of Attnang-Puchheim . The Western Railway from Salzburg to Vienna crosses here Salzkammergutbahn of Stainach - Irdning to Schärding; the Attnang-Schärding section is called the Hausruckbahn . In addition to the local regional and regional express trains , Railjets and night trains also stop at the railway junction .

history

The Attnang-Puchheim train station was opened in 1860. With the completion of the Salzkammergut Railway in 1877, the station became an important traffic junction through which the salt from the Salzkammergut could be transported to the Westbahn Magistrale without any problems. In addition, the station was the terminus of Austria's first coal railway.

Towards the end of the Second World War , on April 21, 1945, during a heavy bombing raid on Attnang-Puchheim, the station buildings and tracks, including 67 locomotives and 560 cars, were completely destroyed. Several hundred people were killed at the train station and on the "Kreuzland" area immediately to the north. To date, the search for duds in the underground city and train station shafts has not yet been completed.

Boiler house, train conveyance point, railway depot

The station's electric locomotive hall is a listed building

In 1906 and 1907 a new boiler house with a large roundhouse and turntable was built on the north-western head of the station on the side. After completion, the vehicles and staff from the former Ebensee boiler house were relocated to Attnang-Puchheim. In the course of the conversion of the Salzkammergutbahn to electrical operation in 1924, the Attnang-Puchheim train conveyance station received class 1029 locomotives , and three years later newly delivered class 1170.1 machines were added. With the transition to the German Reichsbahn in 1938, Attnang-Puchheim became a depot . The tasks of the plant also included locomotive and wagon repairs, looking after the locomotive stations in Ebensee, Stainach-Irdning, Bad Aussee, Schärding and Lambach, as well as keeping an emergency train with a doctor, equipment and lighting car ready. In 1941 450 railway workers worked in the depot.

Track plan Attnang-Puchheim (before the renovation)

At the end of 1940, the electrification of the Western Railway from Salzburg to Attnang-Puchheim was completed. Operation in this area made no special demands on performance or speed, which is why, in the following decades, vehicles that had been displaced by more modern vehicles elsewhere were often based in Attnang-Puchheim. This initially included the "crocodiles" of the E 89 series, which were superfluous after the delivery of the new E 94 for the Arlberg and Brenner routes. With the transition to the Austrian Federal Railways, the machines, now designated as 1089 and 1189 , were used in the same services. From 1969 until the last example was taken out of service in 1979, all remaining locomotives of this series were stationed in Attnang-Puchheim. The series 1073 and 1041 were also based here in the last few years of operation.

Other offices

After the takeover of the BBÖ by the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the structure of the departments changed. Attnang-Puchheim became the seat of a machine office to which the Attnang-Puchheim and Wels depots as well as the Attnang, Bad Aussee, Ebensee and Steeg-Gosau catenary management were subordinate.

After the founding of the ÖBB , the organization of the offices was changed again; the Attnang-Puchheim train conveyance management took over the duties of the former machine office. With the continuation of electrification in the direction of Linz in 1949, ÖBB put a new substation into operation. Today Attnang-Puchheim is the seat of an electrical operations management of the ÖBB.

New building

In 1997 the Ministry of Transport provided the funds for planning various infrastructure projects. For Attnang-Puchheim, in addition to the reconstruction of the station, a central signal box, the redesign of the control center and structural measures in the electrical operation center were planned.

Since the infrastructure of the Attnang-Puchheim train station, which originated from the post-war period, was out of date, extensive renovation and new construction measures were designed by the ÖBB and the Attnang-Puchheim municipal council from 2008 . The demolition of the old reception building, the construction of a new station hall and a new access tunnel from Rennerplatz, the expansion of the existing pedestrian tunnel, new platform access with lifts and escalators, the renovation of the platforms and a new bus terminal were carried out . Construction work began in September 2010. In January 2011, the above-ground station building was demolished.

An important entrance to the station is from Dr.-Karl-Renner-Platz. The bus terminal, which is the hub for numerous regional buses, is also located there. However, the main entrance to the station is on Bahnhofsstrasse (B1), where the taxi stands and short-term parking spaces are located in front of the reception building. The latter can still be accessed from Salzburger Straße (Alt-Attnang). In the reception building there is a waiting room on the ground floor and the access to platform 1. In the basement you will find the ÖBB travel center, ticket machines, lockers, toilets, an ATM and a bakery. The technology is housed on the upper floor.

Platforms

There are five newly built platforms at the Attnang-Puchheim station. There is a house platform (platform 1) and two central platforms (platform tracks 2 and 3 as well as 4 and 5). Head platform 21, which was still in operation before the new station was built, was dismantled as part of the renovation work.
