The BBÖ 1029 was an electric locomotive of the Austrian Federal Railways for passenger train traffic .

With a law passed in 1920, the electrification of the Austrian railways was decided. Starting from the west, the mountainous routes over Arlberg, Brenner, Tauernrampe and the Salzkammergutbahn were the first to be electrified. In line with the topography of the routes, the first locomotives were slow-moving machines for ramp operation.

For the fast passenger trains, the BBÖ ordered twelve locomotives of the 1029 series in 1920 and another eight in 1921. These were machines with the 1'C1 ' axle configuration. Two electric motors drove the coupling axles via a common back gear and a jackshaft. The machines were delivered from 1923 to 1925 and were originally designed for 70 km / h; two locomotives were delivered as a trial with a gearbox for 80 km / h. By 1930, all locomotives were converted for 75 km / h.

The vehicles were used on all lines that were electrified at the time, for example Innsbruck - Telfs - ( Landeck ), later to Salzburg and Vorarlberg . They were the first locomotives on the Salzkammergutbahn electrified in 1923 .

When it was taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1938, the machines were included in the German numbering system as E 33. The Reichsbahn began to retire the not very reliable machines as early as 1942, so that at the end of the war there were still 13 locomotives available. Six of them were in Austria and seven in Germany. The locomotives in Germany were stationed at the Basel Badischer Bahnhof depot and were mainly used on the Wiesentalbahn and Wehratalbahn . In 1947 two machines were exchanged for E 71s that had remained in Austria and in 1952 all 1029 were finally back in their home country.

In 1954, the locomotives were given the designation 1073 according to the new numbering scheme of the ÖBB . Ten of them were re-motorized together with AEG , the rest were taken out of service. The top speed could be increased to 90 km / h. They were used near Vienna for passenger trains , for example on the Pressburger Bahn . They were also used for the Hütteldorf - Unter Purkersdorf shuttle train , which was "wrapped up", that is, with the locomotive in the middle of the train and with two cars each before and after the locomotive. A passenger train from Attnang-Puchheim to Linz was also run by such a locomotive at the end of the 1960s. The decommissioning of the locomotives began in 1970 and was completed in 1975 when the 1073.03 and 1073.14 were parked. Some machines were used as train preheating systems until the early 1980s .

The only remaining locomotives, 1073.08 and 20, are now owned by the Austrian Society for Railway History and are based in Ampflwang .
