Cheile Turzii

The Cheile Turzii ( German  Thorenburger Klamm or Thorenburger Schlucht , Hungarian Tordai-hasadék ) is a limestone gorge in the Trascău Mountains on the eastern edge of the Western Carpathians in western Transylvania in Romania , not far from the city of Turda (Thorenburg) .

The approximately two kilometer long gorge is traversed by the Hăşdate brook , which has dug itself into the limestone here and thus breaks through the ridge of the Trascău Mountains. The gorge is bounded on both sides by approximately 300 meter high steep walls. There are several caves in these. The gorge was inhabited as early as the Neolithic . Since 1938 the gorge has been placed under nature protection because of the occurrence of over 1000 plant species, some of them alpine. This area has now been expanded to 176 hectares. The fauna in it includes 67 species of birds, fish, amphibians and some mammals such as foxes, weasels, martens, wild boars.

A footpath was laid out in the valley floor. The slopes and walls are only accessible to mountaineers and climbers.
