The Targu Mures Airport ( IATA : TGM , ICAO : LRTM international Transylvania Airport ) is an international airport in Targu Mures in Romania . It is located on the territory of the nearby town of Ungheni . In the first four months of 2013, a passenger volume of 82,389 people was recorded.

history

The airfield in Târgu Mureș, opened in 1936, was located on an area of ​​313 hectares, two and a half kilometers south of the city center. Aurel Vlaicu landed here with his plane in 1912 . In 1953, the grass runway was extended to 1,100 meters and a seven-meter high control tower was also built. In 1961, construction began on today's airport, which is located south of the Mureș River on the area of ​​the municipality of Vidrasău , about 14 kilometers southwest of Târgu Mureș. The new airport with a grass runway of around 1300 mx 30 m and a total area of ​​78 hectares was equipped with a two-kilometer-long concrete runway in 1969. In 1978, 89 employees handled 19,077 passengers here. In 2003 the airport area was expanded to 92 hectares and fenced off. The number of air travelers rose steadily, so that in 2013 363,398 passengers were registered.
