The Aeroportul Internațional "George Enescu" Bacau , also Bacau "George Enescu" International Airport or in German Airport Bacau or George Enescu Airport Bacau is an international airport in Romania near the city of Bacau . It is named after George Enescu .
The Romanian Air Force also used it as a military airfield under the name Baza 95 Aeriană Bacău "Alexandru Șerbănescu" .
history
During the Second World War, there was a field airfield on the site of today's airport , which was used by the Air Force in June / July 1944 . She referred to it as "Bacau-Trotus", in contrast to the "Bacau-Margineni" airfield north of the city from the prewar period. In Bacau-Trotus were the Fw190s of the II. Group of the battle squadron 2 (II./SG 2) as well as the 10th and 14th squadrons of the battle squadron 9 (10th and 14th (Pz.) / SG 9) for fighting tanks were equipped with the Hs 129B-2 .
The airport opened on April 1, 1946 for civil, cargo and passenger operations. The airport was expanded in the seventies, so that it received international status on December 30, 1975. The airport has been a member of the Airports Council International since 1997 .
The base of the air force in its current form was set up in 1995 as the 95th training flight center and after several years of reorganization of the air force in view of Romania's accession to NATO , it was given its current name of 95th air base in 2004. Jet training was the responsibility of a school squadron, the Escadrila 205 , which borrowed its MiG-21 from the local squadron, the Escadrila 951 . In 2013, the MiG-21s were withdrawn and the 205th squadron decommissioned. Since then, the training has been incumbent on the 951st Squadron, which has since been equipped with the IAR-99C Soim .
After the turn of the millennium, the civilian side of the airport saw great passenger growth and the number of passengers multiplied. Today it is therefore the most important airport in north-east Romania.
Bacau-Margineni Airport
Before the Second World War, the small Bacau airfield was three to four kilometers north-northwest of the city along today's national route 15 .
During the war it was used by both Romanian and German fighter planes. Air force units lying here at the beginning of the German Russian campaign in June / July 1941 were the bulk of Jagdgeschwader 77 , equipped with the Bf 109E / F at the time , and the long-range reconnaissance aircraft of the 3rd squadron of the ObdL reconnaissance group (3rd (F) / reconnaissance group. Gr.Ob.dL) and the 2nd season of the reconnaissance group 22 (2nd (F) / Aufkl.Gr. 22).
In the early summer of 1944 when the Wehrmacht withdrew, parts of battle squadrons 2, 9 and 10 used the airfield; the last German association was the 2nd season of the close reconnaissance group 14 (2./NAGr. 14) until August .
