Carpatair is a Romanian airline based in Timișoara and based at Timișoara Airport .

history

Carpatair was founded in 1999 under the name Veg Air and began flight operations in February of the same year with a Yakovlev Jak-40 leased by Moldavian Airlines from Cluj . The company was given its name, which still exists today, in December 1999 when investors from Sweden and Switzerland acquired a 49% stake.

Carpatair gained high market shares as it was one of the first airlines to offer international connections from the Romanian Transylvanian region and was initially able to hold its own against the largest Romanian airline TAROM . In addition, there was close technical and organizational cooperation with the Moldavian Moldavian Airlines and contracts with companies such as Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines .

From 1999 to 2007 Carpatair operated the now retired Saab 340 . In spring 2013, all six Saab 2000s were also taken out of service, which led to a significant reduction in the size of the fleet.

After several routes had been suspended a few days earlier, Carpatair filed for bankruptcy on January 23, 2014 , but operations are to be maintained.

After the company had survived the bankruptcy proceedings, the company flies today as a charter line with bases in France and Italy.

Destinations

Carpatair used to link Timișoara with cities in Romania , Italy , Ukraine and Moldova . In addition, destinations in Italy were served from Chișinău , Craiova and Iași . In June 2013, Carpatair cut numerous routes to and from Timișoara, including the flights to Düsseldorf and Munich , as part of a realignment . The connection to Stuttgart was also discontinued.

Incidents

On February 2, 2013, an ATR 72-500 operated by Carpatair on behalf of Alitalia shot 300 meters over the runway on Alitalia flight 1670 when landing at Rome Fiumicino Airport . 16 people were injured on board the aircraft, some seriously. The Alitalia lettering and its logo were painted over with white paint at the scene of the accident the night after, according to the media, the airline should be protected from possible damage to its image. After the incident, Alitalia temporarily terminated its collaboration with Carpatair. The affected machine is no longer in operation at Carpatair.
