Gilău [ ˈd͡ʒiləu ] (outdated Gelău ; German Gela , Hungarian Gyalu ) is a municipality in the Cluj district in the Transylvania region in Romania .
Geographical location
The municipality of Gilau is located in the west of the Transylvanian Basin in the Somesch Highlands (Podișul Someșelor) east of the Gilau Mountains . At the mouth of the Căpuş brook in the Someşul Mic (Little Somesch) and the Drum național 1 - here part of the European route 68 - the village of Gilău is 14 kilometers west of the district capital of Cluj-Napoca (Klausenburg) .
Gilau has a connection to the A3 motorway .
history
The place Gilau was first mentioned in 1246. When the Tatars invaded , the place where the Transylvanian bishop had a manor was completely destroyed. Later the Hungarian King Béla IV settled mainly Transylvanian Saxons . The Roman Catholic bishop László Geréb built a castle here in the 15th century, which after several renovations is now a special school in the middle of a park.
According to the Romanian Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the settlement of Gilău goes back to the Neolithic . Archaeological excavations on the area known by the locals as Groapa lui Puri and Dâmbul Țiganilor indicate settlement in the Bronze Age , at Dealul Cetății and in the castle park in early history , as the Roman fort Gilău was located there.
In the Kingdom of Hungary the place belonged to the chair district gyalu in the team shank Cluj then the historic district of Cluj and from 1950 to today's Cluj County at.

The highest number of inhabitants and that of Romanians in 1977 have been registered in the area of today's municipality since 1850. The highest number of Magyars (1367) was determined in 1941, that of Roma (646) in 2011 and that of Romanian Germans in 1850.
Attractions
- Gilău Castle , originally from around 1300, has been rebuilt several times. Among other things, residence of the Hungarian Queen Isabella Jagiellonica . In the castle park are the ruins of the Roman fort Gilau .
