Luna (outdated Luna de Arieş , Luna Arieşana ; German Lone , Hungarian Aranyoslóna or Gerendlóna ) is a municipality in the Cluj district in Transylvania , Romania .

Luna is located in the extreme southeast of the Cluj County, on the right bank of the Arieș River , just before its confluence with the Mureș . The district capital of Cluj-Napoca is located about 40 km (as the crow flies) northwest of Luna.
history
The place was first mentioned in 1270 under the name Lona . At that time it belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary . Documents from the 16th century already speak of a predominantly Romanian population. In 1651 the place was largely destroyed by fire during riots. Luna then went through a severe crisis for several decades; The plague raged in 1710 , and Tartars invaded in 1717 . In 1784 serf peasants from Luna took part in the uprising under Horea .
In September 1848, Romanian farmers from eight villages gathered in Luna to protest against being drafted into the Hungarian Revolutionary Army. On September 12th, she carried out a massacre among the peasants that killed 30 people. Since the end of the First World War, Luna, like all of Transylvania, has belonged to Romania.

Around 1720, 36 families lived in the village of Luna - excluding the villages that are incorporated today - which is likely to correspond to around 200 inhabitants. In 1750, 777 people lived in the village. At the 2002 census there were 4450 people in the entire municipality, of which 3835 Romanians, 456 Hungarians , 155 Roma and 2 Germans .
