The road leads from Cășeiu ( Hungarian Alsókosály ), where it branches off from Drum național 1C (also European route 58 ) to the north, via Târgu Lăpuș and Copalnic-Mănăştur to the district capital Baia Mare (Frauenbach) , where it meets Drum național 18 and at this ends.
The length of the road south of Târgu Lăpuș, which was not yet fully paved in 2015, is around 80 kilometers.
