Námestovo (Hungarian Námesztó , Polish Namiestowo ) is the largest city and capital of the Okres of the same name in northern Slovakia .
Location and general
The city is located on the western bank of the Arwa Reservoir (Slovak: Oravská priehrada ) and was first mentioned in writing in 1558.
There is a large car park with a tourist information center, an amphitheater for cultural events and several guesthouses built in 2004 and 2005 right on the lakeshore. In the north of the city, under the socialist rule of Slovakia, a prefabricated housing estate was built in which almost half of the population of Námestovo live. Due to the hillside location, however, you have an excellent view of the reservoir from there.
The city is connected by a bridge to its southeastern part of the municipality Slanická Osada , which arose from Slanica , which disappeared in the reservoir and was incorporated in 1953. This district nestles along the banks of the reservoir and consists mainly of one of the largest hotel and catering schools in Slovakia (approx. 1000 students) with a public restaurant and hotel, several guest houses and holiday homes as well as private holiday homes. From here, ships also go to Museum Island on the Arwa reservoir in summer.
On January 25, 2012, the local ice rink at the Hotel Altis Oravska collapsed . In the disaster, however, there were no injuries, as the former NHL professional Richard Zedník reacted quickly and took his team off the ice in time. The hall was only completed in summer 2010 and opened in November of the same year.
