Lokca is a place and a municipality in northern Slovakia , with 2392 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in Okres Námestovo , which belongs to the higher administrative unit Žilinský kraj .
geography
Lokca is located in the traditional Orawa (German Arwa) landscape in a valley between the Oravská Magura and the Beskids , at the confluence of the Hruštínka stream with the Biela Orava river , seven kilometers from Námestovo and 26 kilometers from Dolný Kubín .
history
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1554, the church with churchyard had stood here since 1550. In 1665 a brick church was built in place of the wooden church. In 1683 the place burned down together with the archive. In 1739 359 people died of the plague. In addition to agriculture, forestry, rafting and weaving were well developed. In 1828 the place had 153 houses and 919 inhabitants.
From 1918 to 1969 Lokca was the terminus of the Orava Forest Railway , which was built from Oravská Lesná .
