The municipality is located in the traditional Orava ( Eng . Arwa ) landscape in the southwestern part of the Oravská kotlina basin on the Hruštinka brook , which is a right tributary of the Biela Orava . The Oravská Magura rises south of the municipality , with the Príslop pass ( 808  m nm ) directly south of the village. Administratively, the municipality is divided into the districts of Hruštín and Vaňovka.

history

Until the 16th century the area was heavily forested and accordingly only sparsely populated, but this changed after the Wallachian colonization. The place was founded in 1588 by a group of Wallachians from the now submerged place Ústie nad Oravou and was obligatory to the Arwa Castle . The population was engaged in agriculture (potato and grain breeding) and cattle breeding, besides there were also some crafts that were mainly oriented towards agriculture. The climatic conditions were difficult, however, so that there were repeated emigrations to Lower Hungary, in the 19th and 20th centuries in North America. In 1739 the plague killed 222 people. In 1975 the place Vaňovka (Hungarian Vanyovka ) was incorporated.
