Vasiľov (until 1927 Slovak "Vasilovo"; Hungarian Vasziló ) is a municipality in the far north of Slovakia with 826 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and belongs to the Okres Námestovo within the Žilinský kraj .

geography

The village is located in the western part of the Oravská kotlina basin on the lower reaches of the Hruštínka brook , a right bank tributary of the Biela Orava . The center of the village is at an altitude of 650  m nm and is 11 kilometers from Námestovo and 22 kilometers from Dolný Kubín .

Neighboring municipalities are Breza in the north, Lokca in the northeast and east, Babín in the south, Hruštín in the west and Krušetnica in the northwest.

history

The place was created around the middle of the 16th century under Wallachian law by a certain Félix Hyra at the request of the then lord of the Arwaburg, Franz Thurzo. The village was first mentioned in writing in 1554 as Wasylov . In the same year, a tax of 1 florin was due for each of four settlements built . Vasiľov belonged to the territory of the Arwaburg and was administered by inheritors. In the 17th century Vasiľov was devastated several times because of class revolts, in the so-called "frozen year" 1715 the village experienced a famine due to a bad harvest. In 1828 there were 87 houses and 448 inhabitants, who were mainly employed as farmers.

The place in Arwa County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

population

According to the 2011 census, 795 inhabitants lived in Vasi Einwohnerov, of whom 781 were Slovaks and one each was a Magyar , a Pole and a Czech . Two residents indicated a different ethnic group and nine residents gave no information about the ethnic group .

764 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church and one resident to the Evangelical Church A. B; one resident professed a different denomination. Seven residents were non-denominational and the denomination of 22 residents was not determined.
