Vavrečka (Hungarian Vavrecska ) is a municipality in the far north of Slovakia with 1581 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and belongs to the Okres Námestovo within the Žilinský kraj .
geography
The municipality is located below the Oravská Magura mountain range on the western bank of the Orava reservoir . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 648 m nm and is three and a half kilometers from Námestovo .
Neighboring municipalities are Námestovo in the north, Trstená in the east, Štefanov nad Oravou in the southeast, Tvrdošín in the south, Ťapešovo in the southwest and Oravská Jasenica in the west.
history
Vavrečka as a place arose in the 16th century under Wallachian law and was first mentioned in writing as Zigmundka in 1592 ; today's name appears in 1609 as Wawreczka . The village belonged to the estate of the Arwaburg and was administered by inheritors. During the Kuruzan Wars, Vavrečka was devastated and then rebuilt in another place. In 1828 there were 91 houses and 611 inhabitants; In addition to agriculture and livestock farming, forestry, the manufacture of wooden dishes and linen weaving were also common.
The place in Arwa County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Vavrečka had 1,403 inhabitants, 1,383 of whom were Slovaks, two Czechs and one Moravian and one Pole. One resident indicated a different ethnic group and 15 residents gave no information in this regard. 1355 inhabitants supported the Roman Catholic Church, four inhabitants joined the Greek Catholic Church and one inhabitant joined the Protestant Church AB. 19 inhabitants had no denomination and for 24 inhabitants the denomination was not determined.
