Solivar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Solivar (German Salzburg , Hungarian Tótsóvár - until 1873 Sovar ) is a place and now a district of Prešov in East of Slovakia . It is located southeast of the city center on the left bank of the Sekčov River .

The history of the place is closely linked to the extraction of salt , hence the name. The first documented sources already record above-ground salt springs in the local area , from whose evaporation salt was extracted. A Slavic settlement probably existed here before the 11th century. In 1571, the mining of rock salt began in the 150-meter-deep Leopold shaft, which lasted a good 200 years. After the mine was flooded in 1752 and underground production ceased, salt was extracted from the brine , but this time on a large scale. To make this possible, a large mechanism ( Göpel , Slovakian called gápeľ ) was created, on whose eight yokes horses worked and pulled large amounts of brine up to the earth. This was then pumped into containers with a total volume of more than 10,000 hectoliters . The salt was then obtained in the boiling plant by evaporating the water.

Today most of the site belongs to the Slovak Technical Museum based in Košice . The long tradition of salt production ended in 2009 when the company Solivary as , which had the monopoly on Slovak salt production, went bankrupt due to over-indebtedness. When the plant was closed, the annual capacity was 100,000 tons of salt.

In 1970 the place Solivar, together with the places Soľná Baňa and Šváby, which had belonged to Solivar since 1960, was incorporated into Prešov.
