Kráľovský Chlmec (until 1948 Slovak "Kráľovský Chlumec"; Hungarian Királyhelmec ) is a city in southeastern Slovakia .
General and location
The city, which is predominantly inhabited by Hungarians, is divided into the place Fejséš and the actual place Kráľovský Chlmec .
It is located in the southern part of the East Slovakian Plain in the so-called Medzibodrožie , which is surrounded by the rivers Tisza , Latorica and Bodrog . The Hungarian border runs about four kilometers south of the urban area; the Ukrainian border is about eleven kilometers to the east.
history
Kráľovský Chlmec was mentioned for the first time as Helmelyz in 1214 ; the place arose at the foot of a medieval castle complex. The settlement of the area took place before then, one of the largest Slavic burial mounds can be found here.
In 1361 there were German settlers. In 1918 the city came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia due to the Treaty of Trianon , but through the Vienna arbitration it was part of Hungary between 1938 and 1945 .
