Zemplínska Teplica (Slovak 1948-1955 "Zemplínsky Svätý Kríž" - 1927-1948 "Kerestur" - older "Križovany" or "Križanovce"; Hungarian Szécskeresztúr ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia , with a population of 1,754 (December 31, 2019) and is located in Okres Trebišov , a district of Košický kraj .

geography

The municipality is located in the western part of the eastern Slovakian lowlands on the Teplica brook , in the shadow of the Slanské vrchy mountain range to the west , at an altitude of 202  m nm. The center is ten kilometers southwest of Sečovce and 16 kilometers west of Trebišov . From Zemplínska Teplica roads lead to Veľké Ozorovce , Egreš and Slanské Nové Mesto (the last one in Okres Košice-okolie ).

history

The place was probably built in the 12th or 13th century on a dirt road crossing. For the first time Zemplínska Teplica is mentioned in a document from 1263 as Cristur . The starting point for this name was the local church dedicated to the Holy Cross. In the late Middle Ages there were some vineyards and there was a water mill at times, otherwise it is and was characterized by agriculture. Major landowners over the centuries were Perényi, Báthory, Drugeth and Soós. In 1828 there are 117 houses and 879 inhabitants. In 1831 the site was one of the centers of the East Slovak Peasant Uprising , which is now remembered by a plaque.

The current place name has been used since 1955 because the name "Svätý Kríž" (= Holy Cross), which itself replaced the Hungarian-sounding name "Kerestúr" in 1948, was considered undesirable in communist Czechoslovakia.
