Hraň (1927-1948 Slovak "Garan" - to 1927 "Garana"; Hungarian Garany ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,566 (December 31, 2019), which for Okres Trebišov , a circle of kraj Košický as well as for traditional Landscape Zemplín belongs.

geography

The municipality is located in the eastern Slovak lowlands on the right bank of the Trnávka river , which flows into the Ondava near the village . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 101  m nm and is 17 kilometers away from Trebišov .

Neighboring communities are Zemplínske Hradište in the north, Malčice in the northeast and east, Sirník and briefly Zemplínske Jastrabie in the south and Novosad in the west.

history

Hraň was first mentioned in writing in 1360 as Garan and at that time belonged to the Lossonczy family . Other landowners were Pauliner from Trebischau (1686), Forgách (1753) and Almássy (late 18th century). In 1787 there were 55 inhabitants and 499 inhabitants and in 1828 119 inhabitants and 887 inhabitants who were employed in agriculture, fruit and wine-growing and as fishermen. In 1831 many residents took part in the eastern Slovak peasant uprising , and from 1880 to 1890 many residents emigrated.

Until 1918, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. On the basis of the First Vienna Arbitration Award , he was in Hungary again from 1938 to 1944.

According to the 2011 census, 1606 people lived in Hraň, of which 1404 were Slovaks, 15 Magyars, 13 Roma, three Czechs and one Jew, one Russian and one Ukrainian; two residents belonged to other ethnic groups. 166 residents gave no information in this regard. 903 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 258 residents to the Reformed Church, 152 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, 34 residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses, 21 residents to the Orthodox Church, 13 residents to the Evangelical Church and two residents to the Seventh-day -Adventists; eight residents professed a different religion. 36 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination of 179 inhabitants was not determined.

  • Roman Catholic crucifixion church in Baroque style from the years 1756–57, the main altar with two side altars was not completed until 1766

  • Country castle in neoclassical style from 1903 below the Stuchla hill . In WWII it was the location of a concentration camp; today there is a psychiatric institution for children there
