Transvulcania

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Transvulcania is an ultramarathon on the Canary Island of La Palma with a running route that has been changed from 83.3 to 73 kilometers since 2014, on which a total difference in altitude of 8525 meters (of which 4415 m uphill and 4110 m downhill) has to be overcome. The Ultra-Run of the Transvulcania brings points in the World Ranking of the International Skyrunning Federation (ISF).

A marathon and a vertical race have been run at the Transvulcania since 2014 as part of the International Skyrunning Federation (ISF) - the latter also in the global ranking of the Skyrunning Federation (ISF). In addition, a half marathon is part of the Transvulcania program from the start.

The international competition has been held annually since 2009. The number of participants in the first year was 378. In 2014 there were already over 2000 athletes from 50 countries at the start, which meant that the capacity limit of the competition was reached.

Running disciplines

In addition to the ultramarathon, other running disciplines, half marathons , marathons and vertical trails were carried out.

Running tracks

The ultra marathon starts at 6 a.m. in the south of the island at the lighthouse of Fuencaliente , where the ascent of the over 1900 meter high volcano route begins. At this point it is still dark, the runners have to light their way with flashlights or headlamps.

The half-marathon begins at 6:30 a.m. on the same section of the route . At the end of the volcano route, the Refugio El Pilar , is the finish of the half marathon and the starting point of the marathon (at 10:30 am). This is followed by a level running route on the 1400 meter high Cumbre Nueva . Then there is another ascent to the mountain range of the Caldera de Taburiente with the 2400 meter high Roque de los Muchachos . Then it goes steadily downhill again over narrow and stony paths. Before reaching the port of Puerto de Tazacorte , a 500 meter high, steep mountain face has to be overcome over many serpentines (section of the Vertical Trail ).

Puerto de Tazacorte is the goal of the marathon . From here the route leads through the gorge of the Barranco de Las Angustias again approx. 400 meters up to Los Llanos de Aridane , the goal of the ultra marathon .
