The Faro de Fuencaliente is a lighthouse on the south coast of the Canary Island of La Palma, which belongs to Spain , in the municipality of Fuencaliente . It is located at the foot of the Cumbre Vieja directly on the salt pans of Fuencaliente and thus about nine kilometers south of the village of Los Canarios. The tower is operated by the Autoridad Portuaria de S / C de Tenerife (Port Authority for the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife ).

Old tower

The old tower is a rectangular, single-storey lighthouse keeper's house with a tower about twelve meters high. The skylight is about ten meters above the sea on the seaward side. The building was built from stones from Arucas on the island of Gran Canaria between 1882 and 1898 . The tower was opened in 1903 as a navigation aid for coastal shipping on the south coast of the island. It is a larger version of the Faro de Punta Abona tower , which is located on the island of Tenerife . In the earthquakes of 1949 and 1971, the building was so badly damaged that the lighthouse keeper could no longer live here. Operations were automated and maintenance was only carried out every two days. The lighthouse has not been in operation as such since 1985. The building was renovated in 2006 and now serves as the information center of the marine reserve of the island of La Palma ( Centro de Interpretación de la Reserva Marina de la Isla de La Palma ) and as a marine museum ( Museo del Mar ).

New tower

In 1985 the new tower, right next to the old one, was put into operation. It is a cylindrical, 24 meter high tower made of concrete. The white tower has two red ribbons. The fire height is 36 meters. The light has a range of 14  nautical miles .

The tower stands on a small cliff directly on the Atlantic Ocean , about ten meters above sea level and can be reached via a small feeder from the main road LP-207. It is registered under the international number D-2850 and the national identifier 13030.

The new tower is one of four operational lighthouses on the island of La Palma: Faro de Punta Cumplida is in the north, Faro de Arenas Blancas in the east and Faro de Punta Lava in the west .

memorial

A monument was erected next to the old tower in October 2014 to commemorate the Forty Martyrs of Brazil . It is a stone cross with a plaque with the names of the martyrs. A little to the west of the tower, the island government erected 40 concrete crosses on the seabed at the site of martyrdom in 1971. This point is about 20 meters deep and is now a popular diving area.
