The Forty Martyrs of Brazil (in Spanish also Martyrs of Tazacorte ) are a group of 40 Jesuits (32 Portuguese, 8 Spanish) who were martyred in 1570 under the leadership of Inácio de Azevedo as missionaries on the way to Brazil .

During the crossing, her ship was attacked and boarded on July 15, 1570 off La Palma by Huguenot privateers under the leadership of Jacques de Sores . He had de Azevedo and all the other Jesuits on board killed except for one.

Pope Pius IX beatified the 40 Jesuits on May 11, 1854 . Remembrance day is usually July 15th. The Society of Jesus celebrates it on January 19th along with other Jesuit martyrs.

In memory of the beatified, 40 concrete crosses were placed on the seabed by the island government of La Palma at the place of martyrdom. The spot is about 20 meters deep. It is now a popular diving spot and is located near the Fuencaliente lighthouses . A stone cross with a plaque bearing the names of the martyrs was placed next to the old lighthouse in October 2014.
