The Faro de Punta Lava (also Faro de las Hoyas ) is a lighthouse on the west coast of to Spain belonging Canary Island of La Palma . It is used to determine the position of coastal shipping and is located in the municipality of Tazacorte , about 700 meters north of La Bombilla and about two kilometers from Puerto Naos .

The tower is operated by the Autoridad Portuaria de Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Port Authority for the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife).

history

The land on which the lighthouse is located did not exist before 1949. With the volcanic eruption of the San Juan in June 1949, a lava flow poured from the western flank of the Cumbre Vieja from about 1,300 meters above sea level into the Atlantic, where it formed an approximately 6 km × 3.5 km large lava platform in the sea. On this lava platform there are mainly banana plantations (Las Hoyas) with Playa Nueva (also called: Playa de Los Guirres ) in the north, a bathing beach with a promenade, and in the south, the beach settlement La Bombilla (with a small beach).

In the national lighthouse plan of 1985/1989, the construction of a tower on the west side of the island at Punta del Moro (in the municipality of Tijarafe ) was initially planned; In the course of further planning, however, the location was relocated 9 kilometers south to the Punta Lava. The lighthouse was put into operation in 1996.

tower

The octagonal, white concrete tower is 48 meters high. It stands on a cliff directly on the Atlantic Ocean , about three meters above sea level. The lighthouse is registered under the international number D-2851 and national identifier 13032.

equipment

The Faro de Punta Lava is one of four operational lighthouses on La Palma (in the north is the Faro de Punta Cumplida , in the southeast of the Faro de Arenas Blancas and in the south of the Faro de Fuencaliente ). At first it was operated with a fixed acrylic horizon optic. In 1998 new optics were installed and later the lamps were replaced with others with sealed light. Its three white lights, which come on every 20 seconds, have a range of 20  nautical miles .
