Diego Legrand (composer)

Diego Legrand (born September 20, 1928 in Montevideo , † July 24, 2014 there ) was a Uruguayan composer and musician.

Legrand's musical career began with piano training first with Adela Taborda at the Conservatorio Kolischer and later with Sara Bourdillón at the Escuela Normal de Música . In composing, counterpoint and harmony he was a student of Nydia Pereyra Lizaso and Guido Santórsola . In 1970 he expanded his knowledge during stays in Europe. He received a scholarship for the summer composition course held by Cristóbal Halffter in Santiago de Compostela , Spain . He also took classes in electroacoustic techniques with Jorge Arriagada at the Center for Students and Arts in Paris . In 1971 he took part in the "Primer Curso Latinoamericano de Música Contemporánea" in his home country Uruguay. In 1982 he received an invitation from the German Music Council . As a result, he took part in several festivals and visited several German music centers. These were Cologne, Munich, Freiburg, Berlin and Stuttgart.

In 1956 he wrote his debut work, a piano piece called "Danza criolla", which premiered the following year and was awarded first prize at the Asociación de Estudiantes de Música competition. He wrote his first symphony, which was premiered at SODRE , with "Música para cuerdas" in 1960. In the course of his career, more than 70 symphonies and chamber music pieces have been added. These were premiered and performed in Uruguay, Argentina , Chile , Brazil , Canada , Venezuela , Germany , France , the USA , Finland , Italy and the Netherlands , among others . At least eleven of his works have been published internationally on phonograms. This includes the "Diego Legrand - Siete composiciones" published by the Tacuabé label .

In 1999 he received the Premio Morsoli . He was a member of both the Núcleo de Música Nueva and the Sociedad Uruguaya de Música Contemporánea .
