history

The area of the church district corresponds to that of the Schmalkalden rule , half of which belonged to the Landgraviate of Hesse from 1360 and to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel from 1583 . At first all parishes were Lutheran ; by Landgrave Moritz also the emergence of a has been since the beginning of the 17th century but reformed church encouraged. Within the Evangelical State Church in Hessen-Kassel there was a Lutheran and a Reformed superintendent . It was not until 1873 that the diocese of Schmalkalden was created as part of a centralization of church structures, which then also existed from 1934 as the deanery of Schmalkalden within the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck. When the district of Herrschaft Schmalkalden passed from the Prussian province of Hessen-Nassau to the administrative district of Erfurt in 1944 and became part of the state of Thuringia in 1945 , nothing changed with regard to the church affiliation with Kurhessen-Waldeck. Because of the internal division of Germany, an agreement was signed with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia in 1951 . From 1968, however, the GDR authorities prevented the participation of synodals from Schmalkalden in the regional synods, since according to the new GDR constitution, the church borders had to correspond to the state borders. On the basis of a contract dated April 28, 1970 (supplemented by a secret additional protocol from Bishops Moritz Mitzenheim and Erich Vellmer on the option of reorganization after the hoped-for German reunification), the deanery was therefore incorporated into the Thuringian church. At the request of the Dean's Synod in spring 1990, this integration was reversed in 1991.
