history

The Moosburg was already in the Moosbachtal in the 12th century and served the Thuringian Landgraves von der Wartburg to control the trade route Hohe Straße and to secure the border area. At the beginning of the 14th century the castle was destroyed, according to legend, a remnant of the gang founded the village of Rotterode .

In 1330 came Rotterode than hitherto hersfeldisches fief of the lords of Frankenstein by purchase of the Counts of Henneberg -Schleusingen ( "Frankensteiner deed"). In the 14th century the place was fiefdom of the Schmalkalder Canon Monastery and appeared in 1340 in a land register of the office of Schmalkalden as a desert under the name "Roterot". With the office of Schmalkalden, the place came under a Henneberg-Hessian dual rule in 1360 and fell completely to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel after the Hennebergs died out in 1583 . In 1791 the place was affiliated to the Hallenberg office in the Hessian rule Schmalkalden .

The residents of the place lived mainly from small iron crafts (nail smiths) and agriculture until the 20th century. For a long time there was no church in the village, only a prayer room in a public building. The Johanneskirche was not built until 1955.

The municipality of Rotterdam was incorporated into the city of Steinbach-Hallenberg on January 1, 2019. Before that, Rotterode belonged to the Haselgrund administrative community .
