location

The village of Unterschönau and its district are located on a plateau of the southern roof of the Thuringian Forest . The district is framed by forest. The state road  1128 opens up the area for traffic.

history

In 1360, Unterschönau was divided into three parts. Amt Hallenberg, Schmalkalden and Zent Benshausen. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1360. The starting point of the place was the "Hamer in the Schonouwe under Haldenberg", which was subject to interest after Schmalkalden . Haselbach, also known as Schönau, which divides the place in two halves, once formed the border between the Amt Hallenberg (Grafschaft Henneberg-Römhild) and the Amt Schmalkalden (Grafschaft Henneberg-Schleusingen and Landgraviate Hessen), so that the place belonged to two dominions until 1619 and was then divided between two Hessian offices before he came entirely to the office of Schmalkalden of the Hessian rule Schmalkalden in 1791 .

The community of Unterschönau was incorporated into the city of Steinbach-Hallenberg on January 1, 2019. Before that, Unterschönau belonged to the Haselgrund administrative community .

A partnership with the community of Malsfeld in Hessen has existed since 1990 .

Culture and sights

The Hohe Brücke ( Hochbrögge ) is a stone arch bridge that spans the Hasel river in the center of the village. It was 1807/1808 by French pioneers of Napoleon's army built.

The church of Peter and Paul was built in 1900 in the Hennbergisch-Frankish half-timbered style. As part of the Schmalkalden parish, the parish belongs to the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck as an exclave for historical reasons .

Next to the church was the traditional restaurant Hohe Möst, named after the 888 m high Hohe Möst mountain in Oberschönau. The restaurant was built around 1890 and, according to the guest book, housed Karl Valentin and Hindenburg. The restaurant was closed from October 2018 to June 2020.

North of the village is the seven hectare game reserve on Lautenberg , which is home to red deer , fallow deer and mouflons . A three-kilometer hiking trail leads around the game reserve.

dialect

Due to the valley and border location in the past, a special dialect of the Hennebergic spoken in the area south of the Rennsteig has developed in the towns of the Hasel valley . In Unterschönau this is called Önnerschönajer Platt (Unterschönauer Platt ), which in turn differs slightly from that of the neighboring towns. The nearby Rennsteig forms the border with the Thuringian-Upper Saxon dialect group .

societies

The men's choir 1868 e. V. has its origins in the gymnastics and singing club in Unterschönau, founded in 1868 . The choir, which consists of around 45 members, is led by a Russian-German conductor. He is a member of the Schmalkalden singing group in the German Choir Association and was founded in 1868. In addition, there are partnerships with the male choir of the partner community Malsfeld and the male choir Zeuthen near Berlin. During the GDR era, he was given the title of upper level .

After several fires in the village, a volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1884 . In 1990, for financial reasons, it was briefly subordinated to the VEB Metallverarbeitung Grünes Herz before it became the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Unterschönau e. V. founded. In order to guarantee the operational strength, there are close connections with the volunteer fire brigade in the neighboring town of Oberschönau, which was merged in 2014 to form the Unterschönau volunteer fire brigade.

There are also two sports clubs in town. On the one hand there is the football club SG Ober- / Unterschönau , whose first team plays in the district league and the second in the 2nd district class and plays its home games in Unterschönau on the sports field on Hauptstrasse or in Oberschönau on Kühnbachstrasse. It was created in 1995 from the merger of the previously existing associations Motor Oberschönau and SV Rot-Weiß Unterschönau . Also in 1995 the winter sports club Ober-Unterschönau e. V. founded. It is divided into the sections cross-country skiing, ski jumping and biathlon and is primarily dedicated to child and youth work.

Economy and Infrastructure

Companies

Companies in the metalworking industry are traditionally based in Unterschönau . During the time of the GDR, VEB Metallverarbeitung "Green Heart" was the largest employer in town with up to 300 employees. A successor company today is the metal processing company "Grünes Herz" eG , which mainly produces screws and bolts, among others for Deutsche Bahn . There are also other companies in this area.

traffic

Country road 1128 leads through the village from Steinbach-Hallenberg to Oberhof, from which only a few short spur roads branch off due to the valley location. Three bus routes operated by Meininger Busbetriebs GmbH run through the town with connections to Schmalkalden, Suhl and Oberhof.
