Life
Siegfried Herrmann grew up in one of the Prussian parts of Thuringia . 1951–1953 he was a successful cross-country skier before he dedicated himself to athletics. As a starter in the all-German Olympic team in Melbourne in 1956 , Herrmann suffered an Achilles tendon rupture in the run-up to 1500 m and was eliminated. On August 5, 1965, he set a world record in the 3000 meter run in Erfurt with a time of 7: 46.0 minutes . In 1966 he won the silver medal of the European Indoor Games in the 3000-meter run.
He was GDR champion eight times: in 1964, 1965 and 1966 in the 5000-meter run , 1966 in the 10,000-meter run , 1960 and 1961 in the short-distance cross-country run and in 1964 and 1966 in the long-distance cross-country run. From 1952 to 1965 he set a total of 21 GDR records in the 800-meter run , 1000-meter run , 1500-meter run, 3000-meter run and 5000-meter run. Siegfried Herrmann belonged to Rot-Weiß Unterschönau until 1951 and then from 1951 to 1953 of the company sports association Traktor Unterschönau . Then he moved to SC Chemie Halle via the sports club Einheit-Mitte and from 1962 belonged to SC Turbine Erfurt . During his competition time, Herrmann was 1.76 m tall and weighed 65 kg. His brother Hubert Herrmann was the GDR champion over 1500 meters in 1954.
While he had prepared for the 1956 Olympic Games with pure interval training (and his Achilles tendon had been damaged by the many track training in spikes ), before the 1964 season he switched the training to endurance run with his trainer Ewald Mertens and started with renewed vigor to develop the longer routes for yourself.
During his active time, the trained carpenter and industrial master completed a distance learning course at the German University of Physical Culture to become a certified sports teacher specializing as a trainer. From 1976 Herrmann looked after both the runners and the walkers in Erfurt, including the 1980 Olympic champion Hartwig Gauder . He was active as a trainer until 2000.
