Hennebergisch is a Main Franconian dialect and belongs to the East Franconian language area. Hennebergisch is in southern Thuringia mainly, Hildburghausen , Schmalkalden-Meiningen and in the Suhl area spoken.

Demarcation

In the north, beyond the salt arc towards Bad Salzungen and northeast of the Rennsteig , Henneberg borders on dialects of the Thuringian-Upper Saxon language area, West Thuringian and Central Thuringian . On the northern western edge of the Hennebergischen, in the area around Geisa , East Hessian is spoken, a Lower Hessian dialect. In the Römhild area in the south and in the Thuringian foothills of the Rhön , the Henneberg dialect changes into the Grabfeld dialect. The language border to Itzgründischen runs along the Südhennebergischen staggering southeast of the geographical line Schleusingen - Gleichamberg in the district Hildburghausen.

The dialect area largely corresponds to the historic county of Henneberg . Henneberg mixed dialects with Grabfeld and Lower Franconian are spoken across the districts of Rhön-Grabfeld and Bad Kissingen to the district of Main-Spessart . These include in particular the northeastern villages in the Main-Spessart district such as Aura im Sinngrund, Mittelinn and Obersinn. The hard language border to the neighboring Spessart communities is interesting there. In the places of the former Hessian exclave Schmalkalden , Upper Hessian dialects have been preserved.

Due to the proximity to Thuringian and Hessian dialects, Henneberg has some similarities with them, e.g. B. the initial B with the Osthessischen.
