Altersbach is a district of the town of Steinbach-Hallenberg in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .
geography
Altersbach lies on the southern slope of the Thuringian Forest .
history
In the "Frankensteiner Kaufbrief" of 1330, in which the Lords of Frankenstein sold a large part of their possessions to the Count von Henneberg -Schleusingen, who were related to them , a village "Alharts" is also mentioned, behind which today's Altersbach is believed to be. The place was first mentioned in 1340 as a desert with the name Altusbach . Nothing is known about the early history of the place and the reason why it fell in 1340. Its foundation, however, can be traced back to the early mining in the Arzberg and the nearby historic road through the Thuringian Forest. In the 12th century, the place and the surrounding area came under the ownership of the Schmalkalden office , which had been under the Henneberg-Hessian dual rule since 1360 and fell completely to the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel after the Henneberg population died out in 1583 . In 1791 the place was affiliated with the Hallenberg office in the Schmalkalden lordship . Alterbach was characterized almost purely by agriculture until the 19th century, then the nail-smithing trade gained importance in the village, and after the onset of industrialization in the late 19th century, the place became a commuter settlement for industrial workers in neighboring Steinbach-Hallenberg . In 1891, Altersbach received a railway stop.
The community of Altersbach was incorporated into the city of Steinbach-Hallenberg on January 1, 2019. Before that, Altersbach belonged to the administrative community Haselgrund .
