location

Herrenbreitungen, also called Burgbreitungen, is located on the eastern high bank of the Werra . The main road leading to the construction of the 500 m north of the town projected bypass road as national highway 19 through the district. The 800-year-old village church of St. Michael and the adjoining former monastery complex with the renaissance castle and the 900-year-old Romanesque basilica, which dates back to the monastery era, stand on a hill above the Werra.

history

The first documentary mention of Herrenbreitungen is dated December 19, 1049. Herrenbreitungen arose right at the beginning of the establishment of the royal villa in Frauenbreitungen and on the castle hill on the eastern bank of the Werra with the royal palace , which gave the place the name Burgbreitungen . In the 11th century, Count Palatine Siegfried von Weimar-Orlamünde founded a Benedictine monastery . So Burgbreitungen became Herrenbreitungen. The monastery was a subsidiary of the Hersfeld Abbey and after the abolition of the monastery became the bailiwick and office of the Counts of Henneberg. The Henneberger Graf Poppo XII. had a new Renaissance castle built after 1560, incorporating the remains of the abolished monastery. In 1583 the Henneberg family died out , and the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel became the owner of Herrenbreitungen Castle and the Herrenbreitungen Office . The castle was damaged in the Thirty Years' War , but the original building fabric from the 16th century was largely preserved. The castle then served as a judicial office, prison and rent office .

On July 1, 1950, Herrenbreitungen was incorporated into Breitungen / Werra .
