Siegfried I (Weimar-Orlamünde)
Siegfried von Ballenstedt (* around 1075; † March 9, 1113 ), from the Ascanian dynasty, was as Siegfried I Count Palatine of the Rhine from 1095/1097 to 1113 and Count von Weimar-Orlamünde between 1112 and 1113.
Life
Siegfried was born around 1075 as the son of Count Adalbert von Ballenstedt († between 1078 and 1080) and Adelheid von Weimar-Orlamünde († 1100), a daughter of Count Otto von Weimar , Margrave of Meißen (1062-1067). When his father was murdered by Egeno II von Konradsburg around 1080 , Siegfried and his brother Otto the Rich (approx. 1080–1123) succeeded him as Counts of Ballenstedt. By marrying his mother with Count Palatine Hermann II of Lorraine († 1085; Ezzonen ) and then with Count Palatine Heinrich II. Von Laach († 1095), Siegfried achieved the dignity and power of a Rhineland Count Palatine after Heinrich's death (at least in 1097 at the latest) .
Under the impression of the successful First Crusade , Siegfried is said to have made a trip to Jerusalem . He then renewed the founding of Laach Abbey in 1112 (after 1863 Maria Laach Abbey ), which had already been started in 1093 by his stepfather Count Palatine Heinrich II of Laach († 1095), but was discontinued after his death in 1095.
Count Ulrich II of Weimar-Orlamünde (1070–1112) died in 1112 without leaving any descendants. Due to his descent from Adelheid von Orlamünde, Siegfried now raised a claim to the county, but came into conflict with Emperor Heinrich V (1106-1125). An attack on Siegfried by imperial partisans at the Teufelsmauer near Warnstedt (near Thale ) on February 21, 1113 survived the Count Palatine seriously injured, but soon died on March 9. Siegfried left behind the underage sons Siegfried II (1107–1124) and Wilhelm (1112–1140), who emerged from his marriage to Gertrud, daughter of Count Heinrich von Northeim . The Palatinate was initially lost to the Ascanians until Wilhelm regained it in 1125.
progeny
The marriage with Gertrud von Northeim had three children:
