The family of the Counts of Peilstein (or Peilsteiner ) is a branch line of the Sieghardinger family and is derived from Count Friedrich I. von Tengling . His sons Sieghart I and Friedrich II founded the Burghausen-Schala and Peilstein lines at the end of the 11th century . His son Heinrich I was Bishop of Freising .

history

Property of the Counts of Peilstein at the end of the 12th century.

The Peilsteiners were the founders and governors of the Benedictine abbey Michaelbeuern (and of Stift Reichersberg ). The ownership of this monastery in Attergau could go back to her. This family, which was named after a castle in St. Leonhard am Forst in Lower Austria and held large estates in Austria, Bavaria, Franconia and Friuli , was one of the most powerful dynasties in the state of Salzburg. The Peilsteiners became the chief bailiffs of the bishopric at the beginning of the 12th century. However , they only exercised county rights in the Gastein area , where they were wealthy, just like in the neighboring Tauern valleys and in Reichenhall ( castle and tolls at Karlstein , the bailiwick of the St. Zeno monastery ). According to the Peilstein fief catalog, the Grafschaft Peilstein also included the Cleeberg castle and lordship between Wetzlar and Gießen with a large following, as well as Amerang castle and lordship near Rosenheim , which the Bavarian duke had attracted, and the court of Tengling near Tittmoning . Property near Vienna , Leoben in Styria and Friuli can be accessed.

Since the Peilsteiners derive their descent from Aribo I , the margrave of the Bavarian Ostmark († after 909), they also called themselves " Aribones ". The predecessors of the Peilsteiners should also have owned the Gastein in their entirety. The entire land was probably owned by the Counts of Peilstein, who are known as the lords of the Gastein, before 1023.

In 1218 the Peilsteiner died out in the male line.

In 1356, Duke Rudolf IV was still named Count von Peilstein in his title.
