Mittelstille is a town in Thuringia with around 593 inhabitants (December 31, 2007). Since 1994 it has been part of the town of Schmalkalden in the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen .

Geographical location

The place is located in the Stillergrund between the Schmalkalder district of Näherstille and the Schmalkalder district of Springstille on Landesstrasse 1118. Mittelstille is traversed by the silence that still takes in a few small streams near the village. The largest mountain in Mittelstille is the Stiller Stein , which is of volcanic origin and whose summit is made of clay - porphyry . In addition to the Stiller Stein, there are other mountains whose peaks are also made of clay porphyry - such as the Dörnberg, Goldberg, Franzenberg or Ringberg.

history

In 1210 Mittelstille was first mentioned in a document as "Stillamedio" in the copy book of the Reinhardsbrunn monastery. The original document has been lost, further early mentions of the place followed in the Nova Historia Smalcaldia - spelling "Mittelstilla" - in 1340. During a wilderness investigation of the Hennebergers on August 21, 1420, a chapel for "Mittel Stilla" was mentioned in the Henneberg Urbarium, the spelling " Mittelstillen ”was valid in 1641. In 1589, the“ Neumülle ”in the Mittelstille corridor was the first building in the town that could be documented in writing.

The place was always closely intertwined with the nearby town and rule of Schmalkalden , so the place belonged to the Schmalkalden parish “St. Georgen ". The unsanitary location of a chapel near Mittelstille, which is mentioned in 1420, poses even more puzzles. With the introduction of the Reformation in Schmalkalden, the majority of the inhabitants in Mittelstille also became Protestant. All church festivals and holidays as well as funerals were held in Schmalkalden, and it was not until 1813 that the place received its own cemetery. The church and school "supply" improved with the construction of the simultaneous school in 1864. The building was sufficient because of the small number of inhabitants, which was around 240 in 1850.

This Hessian official map from the 16th century shows the places around Schmalkalden, the place Mittelstille and the Neumühle are shown in the middle of the map.

The first school arose as a result of the Reformation, the first teacher known by name was the linen weaver Georg Höfel from Schmalkalden, who was paid as a school clerk in Mittelstille in 1648. The first statistical data are available from 1769:

37 inhabited buildings with 159 people, including 34 men, 35 women, 46 sons, 33 daughters, a journeyman, an apprentice, four servants, six maids; including three millers, a landlord, at the same time a butcher, a blacksmith, a linen weaver, a whip maker (whip maker?), 25 farm workers (farmers), a forester, a village mayor, a meadow keeper in the lordly service; In the community services there are two chiefs, a schoolmaster, a village servant, a cow and a swineherd, two shepherds and two garrison soldiers (as village policemen?). There is also a bakery and several mills.

In 1819, the bankrupt owner of Neumühle, Heinrich Wilhelm Hartung, became homeless, and the Neumühle property was auctioned off. The lower mill was rebuilt in 1845; it existed for about 40 years and was destroyed to the ground in a major fire in 1886. The Stille Bridge in the local area was renewed in 1863 and cost 126 thalers.

In the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871) 14 men fell out of Mittelstille, and in 1889 the community donated three (!) Reichsmark to the construction of the Kyffhäuser monument in honor of the German war veterans.

In 1879, 17-year-old Ehrhard Eduard Krech asked for permission to emigrate to the United States. A noticeable wave of emigration, such as in the towns of the Thuringian Rhön, did not take place in the economically consolidated Schmalkalder region.

The cultural activity in singers' associations spreads to the country towns. On July 18, 1886, 13 clubs meet on the outskirts to celebrate the song festival. The number of participants was 260 singers. The construction of the railway line to Zella-Mehlis , which had already been expected , was completed between 1889 and 1891. The commissioning of the railway line from Schmalkalden to Steinbach-Hallenberg is celebrated on December 13, 1891. In 1889 another mill was built and it was entrusted to the son of the miller Wolf. School operations were interrupted for a few weeks in 1895 by a doctor's ordinance to prevent the further spread of scarlet fever and diphtheria.

The statistics for 1900:

58 houses with 194 male and 207 female residents, seven horses, 241 cattle, 147 sheep, 154 pigs, 84 goats, 736 poultry and 20 beehives.

The gymnastics club was founded as the first sports club on January 18, 1903, and the warrior club had been in existence for 25 years in 1904. The first connection to the electricity supply took place in 1912, the generator is operated in Steinbach-Hallenberg and is connected to the neighboring towns via an overhead line. 22 inhabitants of the place died as war participants in the First World War and 35 inhabitants in the Second World War plus ten missing residents. In 1941 the upper mill was shut down and the lower mill in Mitteldorf was owned by the family.

In 1959, the farmers merged to form the LPG “Stillergrund”. Operation of the lower mill in Mittelstille ceased in 1971. In the same year, a major fire destroyed an agricultural homestead on Mühlenweg. The LPG "Heinrich Rau" is formed in 1971 from the small and unprofitable local LPGs, the administrative headquarters of the agricultural company is built in Mittelstille. The agricultural cooperative areas in the towns of Trusetal, Seligental, Schmalkalden, Stiller Grund, Haseltal, Viernau and other towns will be handed over to the LPG.

The small town of Breitenbach was incorporated into Mittelstille in 1974. The place grows and receives various public buildings and a department store, a concrete bridge and a sports field are approved. Various streets in the village are being channeled, new drinking water pipes are being laid and paved. In 1984 the site was granted a community antenna system. 1986 a new elevated tank for the drinking water supply has to be built. The "ailing conditions" in the GDR also lead to a peaceful revolution in 1989. With the introduction of the market economy, numerous craft businesses, a car dealership and various service companies were created in the village. On June 1, 1994 Mittelstille was incorporated into Schmalkalden.

With funds from the village renewal, various projects and building renovations are carried out in the village, they also serve to prepare for the 800th anniversary celebration in 2010.
