Asbach is a district of the town of Schmalkalden in the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen in Thuringia .

Asbach is located in an eastern side valley on a western slope between mountains, valleys and forests of the Thuringian Forest . The stream flowing through the district has three sources and is of the same name. In terms of traffic, the district is very well connected to Landesstraße 2610 and the city center.

history

Asbach was first mentioned in a document between 822 and 842. The city goes back to the year 1340. There has been mining and smelting works , iron hammers and grinding cabins for a long time , which confirms an early settlement. The place belonged to the office of Schmalkalden of the Hessian rule Schmalkalden .

In the 19th century, the ironmongery industry was the main source of income. Sources of income were agriculture and animal husbandry. The village church was built in 1730. Today (2012) Asbach is a health resort and has 1500 inhabitants.

The Schmalkalden honorary citizen Petra Sonntag is based in Asbach .
