history

1400 people live in Kleinschmalkalden, of which 850 belong to the Protestant parish .

In the 15th century the village was divided by the border river Schmalkalde . On the eastern side the territory belonged to Saxe-Gotha and on the western side to Henneberg - Hesse .

Hessian Church

50° 47′ 44,7″ N, 10° 28′ 28,3″ O The Hessian Church is located in the middle of the village. In 1719, instead of the old wooden church from 1570, a larger stone church was built according to the population of both communities. The inside was painted white and green. She got a two-story gallery. In the chancel altar with stone altar, baptism and organ . The church is in good structural condition. The roof was re-covered. The fire department maintains the fountain on the east side of the church.

Gotha Church

50° 47′ 56,7″ N, 10° 28′ 57,1″ O The Gotha Church did not get the support from the poorer believers in the part of the village at that time, as did that from the Hessian side, because the income situation here resulted in this dissonance .

The disputes between the two places at that time subsided when the Duke had a second church built on the site of the existing Gottesackers in 1854. This smaller church stands on a slope in a narrow valley. The transept is on the western side of the church building. The interior is again in the colors light blue and pink, as originally. The interior is bright and friendly.

A renovation took place in 2011 and 2012, everything is back to the original.

The wooden baptism with a cast iron lid is a specialty.

Both churches are now run by the Evangelical community of Kleinschmalkalden.
