Flea is a district of flea Seligenthal in Schmalkalden-Meiningen in Franconia dominated south of the Free State of Thuringia .

location

Floh is located in the north of the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district on a southwest slope of the Thuringian Forest directly on the Rennsteig . The height above sea level varies between 340 and 480 meters. Flea lies on the upper reaches of the Schmalkalde . The mountains towards Rennsteig are up to 800 meters above sea level. The mountain lake Ebertswiese is also in the area. Flea is located on the steadily upward winding state road 1026 , which leads over Kleinschmalkalden and the Heuberg . It crosses the Thuringian Forest. The Mommelstein-Bahnradweg runs through Flea .

history

The history of Flea has always been closely linked to the development of the city of Schmalkalden and the Schmalkalden rule . After the fall of the Thuringian Empire, the area around Floh was settled by the victorious Franks. From the Main, Franconians first settled on the edge of the mountains, which gave rise to settlements like Schmalkalden. In a Henneberg land register (property register), Floh is first mentioned in a document in 1340. In 1360 Henneberg bought back his property, which had inherited to the burgraves of Nuremberg. The place name goes back to the Middle High German word vlowe (wash, rinse), which also gave the Flohbach its name.

There are reports, but no documents, about a falcon castle in the vicinity of Flea. Traces on a steep boulder indicate a core castle with a high rampart and a ditch in front. Within this area, pits can be interpreted as the basement of buildings.

In 1537 Martin Luther passed Flea on his trip to the convent in Schmalkalden. In 1588, Floh received a blacksmith's shop by landgrave ordinance. During the Thirty Years War in 1640, Flea was attacked, looted and set on fire by Swedish horsemen. In 1709, Flea was granted the right to brew. Under Napoleon, Floh was the capital of the canton of Flea from 1807 . There were three major fires in Flea (1895, 1902, 1903). A total of over 420 houses, mainly Franconian half-timbered houses, were destroyed.

On June 1, 1994, Floh, Seligenthal and Hohleborn merged to form the new municipality of Floh-Seligenthal .
