The Mommelstein-Radweg, also known as the Mommelstein-Radwanderweg, runs in the 12.5 km core section of the former railway line of the Schmalkalden – Auwallenburg section (see also: Schmalkalder Kreisbahn ).

It has a total length of 28 km between Wernshausen and Auwallenburg and is also intended to serve as a link between the Werratal cycle path and the Rennsteig cycle path on the Rennsteig / Grenzwiese.

expansion

The connection to the Werratal cycle path in Wernshausen has recently been created as the western starting point in the Werratal. The cycle path continues through the Schmalkaldetal into the landscape of the Thuringian Forest and is paved on the railway line to the former Auwallenburg stop.

condition

In the low mountain range of Thuringia, you can overcome a height difference of around 260 meters without major gradients (max. 4.5%). The path in the Auwallenburg cut (see picture) has been closed since 2009 due to the risk of falling rocks; it is diverted with confusing signs.

The onward journey on forest paths to the Mommelstein rock ( 703  m above sea  level ) and to the Rennsteig is possible, but more difficult as there are a number of steep passages to overcome.

Route points

The path leads north of Schmalkalden past the Neue Hütte , a late Classicist blast furnace in which iron ore was smelted with charcoal (now a museum).

The most remarkable engineering structures on the old railway line are the Hundsrück tunnel (86 m long) between Floh-Seligenthal and Kleinschmalkalden and the adjoining viaduct over the Schmalkaldetal.

The stations of the route are: Wernshausen / Ortsmitte - Schmalkalden ( 292  m above sea level ) - Schmalkalden Reiherstor - Seligenthal - Hohleborn - Kleinschmalkalden - Auwallenburg ( 550  m above sea level ) - (Mommelstein - Brotterode - Rennsteig)

history

The railway line was in operation from 1893 to 1996. The first cycle path section in the core area on the former railway line was opened in June 2003.
