The Roque de los Muchachos ( German about Tower of the young men ) with an altitude of 2,426 meters, the highest elevation of about Spain belonging Canary Island of La Palma .
The highest point is formed by old volcanic chimneys that have withstood the erosion of wind and water (see picture). The institute site of the Roque de los Muchachos observatory is located between 2,350 and 2,400 meters above sea level . There is a road near the observatory that connects the west and east sides of the island. Due to the high mountain climate, this route is severely endangered by falling rocks, which are mainly caused by melting ice in spring.
The mountain belongs to the Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente and forms the north-western edge of the caldera . From the Roque de los Muchachos you can see the neighboring islands of Tenerife , El Hierro and La Gomera .
